Schools

Phoenix is served by 325 public schools spread across 30 school districts, along with more than 200 charter and private schools, since many separate independent districts serve the city as a result of annexation over time. Most of the city is split between elementary school districts serving kindergarten through grade 8, which are paired with separate high school districts serving grades 9 through 12; some areas have unified K-12 districts instead. Because district boundaries do not always follow zip codes or city limits, addresses can be checked using the City of Phoenix's school districts resource or the district boundary maps maintained by individual districts such as Phoenix Elementary School District and Phoenix Union High School District.

Getting around

Valley Metro operates a light rail system with two lines, the A Line and B Line, totaling 38.5 miles of track connecting Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa, with the system most recently expanded by the South Central line opening in June 2025. The A Line passes near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, connecting at the 44th Street/Washington station via the free PHX Sky Train people mover, which links directly to airport terminals. Valley Metro also runs bus routes on city streets, suburban express buses, and circulators across Phoenix, Glendale, Tempe, Mesa, Avondale, and Scottsdale.

Homes and housing

Phoenix covers 518.26 square miles of land and has a population density of roughly 3,227.9 people per square mile according to Census data. The city grew rapidly following World War II as residents of northern cities moved westward, and by 1950 more than 100,000 people lived within city limits with thousands more in surrounding communities, reflecting the broad range of housing eras found across the city today.

Things to do

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, located within the city, hosts nearly 44 million passengers annually, reflecting the scale of visitor traffic through the area. Public transit connects to attractions such as the Heard Museum and the Phoenix Art Museum along the Valley Metro Rail corridor.
